Geography

Cuba is the largest country by land area in the Caribbean, and the main island is on the sixteenth no as the largest islets in the world by land area. A bunch of archipelagos ring its shoreline north and south. It is lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico in the western West Indies. In the south of Cuba is Florida and Bahamas and in the north is Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Cuba is about the size of England and the most westerly of the Greater Antilles group, lying a mere 145km towards the south of Florida. A quarter of the country area is properly mountainous. On the West side of Havana is the narrow Sierra de los Organos, growing to 750m and encompassing the Guaniguanico peaks in the west side. South of the Sierra is a narrow strip of 2,320 sq km where the finest Cuban tobacco is grown.

Climate

In Cuba, the weather is tropical, with an arid and relatively cool season from late November to mid-April and a rainy and humid season from the late April to early November. The weather is impartially uniform from one area to the other, but there are some differences that are worth considering. The yearly rainfall is usually between 1,000 and 1,500mm. Winter in Cuba is pleasantly warm in the north and even quite hot in the south, with daytime temperatures around 26 °C from December to February in Havana and around 28 °C in the southernmost areas. The amount of sunshine in Cuba peaks in spring, when the winter disturbances decrease, and before the clouds and rains of the warm season.
